The Advent of “AI” - Redefining Holiday Tradition
This holiday season a different Advent is being observed everywhere: the rampant evolution of computer-based Artificial Intelligence (“AI”)! While Christmas and Hanukkah embody tradition and sentimentality, the AI “ghost in the machine” is presenting a different kind of magic.
What Happens to Human Emotions?
These advanced technologies are now reshaping how we create and evoke heartfelt emotions during joyous times. Is ChatGPT already writing personal holiday messages - and really “stealing” peoples’ jobs??
I want to believe that AI doesn’t dilute the religious basis of the festive season; but effectively complements it. And that the wonder that is the essence of the holidays transcends the technology.

Will AI Be “All There Is”?
I will still return to my own seasonal traditions, including re-reading the works of my favorite author and great storyteller, John Shea. He is noted for his Christmas books - and has an enduring take on the Grinch in his classic “Starlight” book.
For this hallowed season, the big question remains for me: does the sudden prevalence of AI overshadow divine mystery?
The spiritual aspects of religious holidays persist in faith, hope and love that transcends technology. While AI shows immense capabilities, I remind myself that it still remains a tool shaped by human hands. This season affirms the enduring human needs for meaning and guidance beyond the whirlwind of Chat-GPT.
