Looking Back to Greece for Future Conservation

For decades I’ve been immersed in interesting Historic architecture projects.  Yet my enthusiasm was recently revived with a trip to historic Greece. This site of the earliest Olympics in Greece illustrates some of my new practical insights.

Through the years, I have been engaged with Landmarks Illinois and their Suburban Alliance historic preservation efforts, more recently through their dedicated Issues Committee.  This recently fostered new connections with Preservation Chicago advocacy.

Lessons from Abroad

Over the years, US and local conservation issues have been lopsided “David vs Goliath” battles.  And I must admit my interest had been waning because the political and legal strategies have become grueling.

My recent trip to Greece provided a fresh perspective!  Beyond the historical perspective and aesthetic, beauty of the Adriatic coast, I was astounded to see the sophistication and value of the international conservation efforts.

Local Aspects

From my Glenview vantage point, our Jackman Park sculptured column may seem far removed from ancient wonders. But I know this recent travel experience has reignited my passion for local efforts at the History Center and Grove!

I intend to write more soon about detailed takeaways, including: practical local examples, global perspective and technical tips.  Comparing international approaches can help shift the focus to longer term economic and environmental sustainability.

The future rewards are beyond measure.
