“Sign after sign, after sign… And, thus between them, with impunity,  They loused up the whole community. ”

— Dr. Seuss

At the national Scenic America conference, I was reminded of this classic story written by Dr. Seuss to support his California community sign code in 1956.   The story “Signs of Civilization” featured two characters, Guss and Zaxx putting up increasingly large signs to out-compete each other — until “property values slumped to nil” and everyone moved away.

The story and issues haven’t changed much, but it’s still a good reminder for all ages — especially when facing new economic development pressures!
