“Sign after sign, after sign… And, thus between them, with impunity, They loused up the whole community.” — Dr. Seuss
At a recent national Scenic America conference, I was reminded of this classic story written by Dr. Seuss to support his California community sign code many years ago. The story “Signs of Civilization” featured two characters, Guss and Zaxx putting up increasingly large signs to out-compete each other — until “property values slumped to nil” and everyone moved away. This is a continuing issue in many areas of the country. And now there are even more electronic and LED signs added to the mix.
So the story and issues haven’t changed much, but it’s still a good reminder for all ages — especially for areas facing new growth and economic pressures!
